LEARN the nutrients your lawn needs by testing the soil

Healthy soil is a must for thick, strong grass. A soil test will identify common nutrient deficiencies in your lawn, so you know what to apply. To get the best results, test your soil at least every three years, ideally in the spring.

What does a soil test tell you?

The soil test results provide fertilizer and liming rates and nutrient recommendations based on scientific research conducted in Delaware or nearby states with similar soil types, climates, and growing conditions. You’ll learn the appropriate ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to apply. The rates are designed to provide the nutrients needed to help your lawn perform better and maintain soil health in the optimum range for plant growth.

How does a soil test help prevent water pollution?

A soil test will prevent the overapplication of nutrients. Using the right amount of the right lime and fertilizer at the right time can minimize runoff into surface or groundwater.

Where to obtain soil test kits?

You can get a free soil test kit through the Delaware Livable Lawns program. You can also purchase soil test kits through the University of Delaware Soil Testing Program or Agro Lab Soil Testing.

Taking a soil sample

Your soil test is only as good as the sample you send, so follow these tips to get the most accurate results.

• Gather a clean shovel or trowel, bucket, and gallon-sized plastic bag.  
• Thoroughly mix several scoops of soil (four to six inches deep) from different lawn areas in your clean bucket or bag.
• Place approximately one cup of your mixed soil into the plastic bag that came with your soil test kit and return it for analysis.

Interpreting soil test results

After you return your soil sample, the laboratory will analyze it and recommend whether fertilizer and lime applications are needed. Use these recommendations to help select the right products and amounts to apply to your lawn.
